چکیده
where N = g θ̄ dθ̄ dz was the Brunt-Vaisalla (BV) frequency and θ̄ = θ̄(z) was the potential temperature of the environment. For a stable environment (N > 0) we assumed a temporally varying solution of the form z′(t) = ẑe−iωt, where for period P , ω ≡ 2π P . Substitution of the assumed solution into (1) yielded ω = ±N , which means the parcel oscillation period is equal to the BV period of the environment.

Nitratireductor indicus sp. nov., isolated from deep-sea water.
A taxonomic study was carried out on a novel bacterial strain, designated C115(T), isolated from a crude-oil-degrading consortium, enriched from deep-sea water of the Indian Ocean. Cells were Gram-negative short rods, mobile by means of a monopolar flagellum. Growth was observed at salinities of 0-7 % and at 10-43 °C. It was unable to degrade Tween 80 or gelatin. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis...
متن کاملLee Waves and Mountain Waves ∗
Buoyancy perturbations develop when stably stratified air ascends a mountain barrier. These perturbations often trigger disturbances that propagate away from the mountain as gravity (or buoyancy) waves. Gravity waves triggered by the flow over a mountain are referred to as mountain waves or lee waves. Mountain waves sometimes reveal their presence through dramatic cloud formations, such as smoo...
متن کاملDiurnal variation of mountain waves
Mountain waves could be modified as the boundary layer varies between stable and convective. However case studies show mountain waves day and night, and above e.g. convective rolls with precipitation lines over mountains. VHF radar measurements of vertical wind (1990–2006) confirm a seasonal variation of mountain-wave amplitude, yet there is little diurnal variation of amplitude. Mountain-wave ...
متن کاملGlobal Measurements of Stratospheric Mountain Waves from Space.
Temperatures acquired by the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA) during shuttle mission STS-66 have provided measurements of stratospheric mountain waves from space. Large-amplitude, long-wavelength mountain waves at heights of 15 to 30 kilometers above the southern Andes Mountains were observed and characterized, with vigorous wave breaking inferred abov...
متن کاملTrapped mountain waves during a light aircraft accident
On 31 July 2007 a fatal light aircraft crash occurred near Clonbinane, Victoria, Australia and the official investigation concluded that mountain wave turbulence was the likely cause. This study uses three-dimensional numerical modelling and linear wave theory to examine the dynamics of mountain waves during this turbulence event and their role in generating turbulence. Analysis of the observed...
